Most people going north drive on the highway from Playa de las Americas. We have described this trip in the passage ”The northern shore”. If you avoid the motorway, you drive on smaller roads along the shore.

This is a different experience. You pass banana orchards and fishing villages and smaller towns and continue to Los Gigantes. Here you should stop and take a walk along the harbour. Notice the balconies and the bread eating fish in the water. The town is particularly famous for the 4-600 m high cliff that goes straight down into the sea north of the city where the birds use the possibility to build nests. But as elsewhere in Tenerife, many hotels are built.
